The Halifax regional school board saved seven schools from the chopping block Wednesday night, but five other buildings will still be reviewed for possible closure.
The board voted in a marathon five-hour meeting Wednesday to review Central Spryfield Elementary, Gertrude Parker Elementary, Prince Arthur Junior High, Sackville Centennial Elementary and South Woodside Elementary for possible closure. The reviews will look at whether each school should be closed and replaced with a new one or whether the students should be moved to an existing school.
Seven elementaries — Atlantic View Elementary, Caudle Park Elementary, Hillside Park Elementary, St. Joseph’s – Alexander McKay Elementary, Sambro Elementary, Terence Bay site of Atlantic Memorial-Terence Bay School and Upper Musquodoboit Consolidated Elementary — have been removed from the list.
School board staff had recommended that 12 schools be reviewed, sparking a passionate outcry from many parents who have children attending the schools, which are scattered around Halifax Regional Municipality.
