The Beauty of Bookclubs

For the second summer in a row, I’ve tried to organize a book club among my friends. The first summer didn’t go very well due to the lack of organization (and maybe interest) but this summer is different! I’ve taken the role as leader and I’m very optimistic that we will stick to it.  One beautiful aspect of the group is that most our members don’t live in Halifax, but all over the world-including Fleet, England and Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Although all of us don’t live in the same city (or the same country for that matter) we are able to stay connected through our love of literature- cheesy I know, but so true!

Every group facilitates their book club differently. What my group did this year was each of my pals chose a book that they were interested in reading.  I took the liberty of creating a reading schedule and a handy-dandy handout outlining all the books we are reading this summer. I also created a private group on social media so we can stay in touch. At the end of the summer, I’ll host a small members-only gathering for those in town with book-themed cocktails  based on the titles what we have read.

Here are some of the choices my pals picked that I’m looking forward to reading:

Digital book clubs have become popular over the years. Have you heard about Emma Watson’s online book club called Our Shared Shelf? This book club focuses on books and essays about equality. They are currently reading the graphic novel series Persepolis. Maybe Oprah’s Book Club 2.0 is more your thing? Here’s a Complete list of titles read in the past.

Are you already in a book club? Have you heard of the Book Club Kits that you can check-out at Halifax Public Libraries? These kits are for our adult readers and allow you to borrow multiple copies of the same book.  There are many titles to choose from. For a full-listing, click here. If you are interested in borrowing one of our kits, fill out a request using the Ask a Librarian service on our website.
Happy reading!
