I have mixed feelings about last night’s episode of The Big Bang Theory.
On the one hand, I liked that we got to see Howard and Bernadette address the issue that, before they were together Howard was kind of a creep. I’ve said before on the blog that Howard used to be my least favorite character, but his relationship with Bernadette matured him and brought the character to a place where I wasn’t so skeeved out I didn’t find him funny.
On the other hand, the episode wasn’t as funny as I’d hoped it would be. I felt like there was more potential in Howard’s bachelor party than just revealing some unflattering secrets to Bernadette (via a YouTube video in which Raj reminisced about Howard losing his virginity to his cousin, sleeping with a hooker and having a threesome with Raj and a fat Sailor Moon) – and furthermore, it really did feel like Bernadette should have already known some of this stuff.
That said, I liked that the episode ended with a really sweet moment for Howard as, after all, he is a character who doesn’t often get to be sweet. This episode was definitely about people changing and moving forward, and The Big Bang Theory has done a great job of emotionally maturing many of their characters over the past couple seasons. Hell, even Sheldon is in a relationship now.
Some of the other stuff did feel stale, like Leonard trying to assert his masculinity by telling everyone he and Penny had sex in the ocean, and any scene featuring Barry. But I liked the stuff with Sheldon getting jealous about Wil Wheaton, and I enjoyed the scenes of just the three girls.
I’m looking forward to the actual wedding (do you think we’ll finally get to meet Howard’s mother?) and to seeing where the show ends the season. I find myself forgetting that Penny and Leonard are back together, so I hope we see some advancement in their relationship before the season concludes.
What did you guys think of “The Stag Convergence”? Funny? Not so much?
