The Big Bang Theory: Shamy on you!

The Big Bang Theory is back, and the premiere episode was one of the funniest I’ve seen in a while. The show has successfully managed to have Sheldon Cooper go on a date without having it feel weird or contrived. It was hilarious! Big Bang is always at its best when Sheldon and Penny interact, and this episode had the added bonus of them interacting while on a date…with Amy Farrah Fowler.
The Science of Dating
We caught up with the show four months after Sheldon and Amy met, but SHE IS NOT HIS GIRLFRIEND. Sheldon made that very clear when Leonard mentioned Amy to Penny. Sheldon told Penny that he and Amy had been communicating on a daily basis “about my work in physics.About what? Penny was wondering the same thing. “My work in physics. Her work in neurobiology. Most recently, the possibility of our having a child together,” Sheldon told her. Cue a fantastic spit take from Penny.
Apparently Sheldon and Amy thought they could create the perfect genius child by procreating together. It would be a gift to society. (I thought Sheldon understood genetics? Doesn’t he know that two parents well-endowed in one area will not necessarily produce a child with those same strengths? Just look at Heidi Klum and Seal’s children!) They wouldn’t do this using messy, unsanitary sex though. They’d use a petri dish and, hopefully, Penny’s virile and available-for-rent womb. Sheldon was shocked when Penny suggested that it might be beneficial for Sheldon to, you know, get to know the mother of his child. “You don’t think I can achieve the intimacy required via text messaging?” he asked.
So Penny accompanied Sheldon and Amy – or “Shamy” – on their date. And tried with all her might to get them to have a conversation. And what did they finally talk about? The mathematical formula to figure out how many men Penny has dated or slept with! Amy even asked Penny if she considered herself a slut!
Idle Hands
Meanwhile, Wollowitz discovered a new use for the robot he’d “borrowed” from work. Or sorry, a robot hand. He had the robot serving up Chinese food to the gang at the beginning of the episode, albeit very very slowly. The best part of that was when Sheldon commented that soon Penny’s job would be replaced by such a machine and she responded “Really? They’re going to make a robot that spits in your hamburger?” That is why I love having Penny and Sheldon in the same room.
Wollowitz had the robot hand giving him a massage, and then he realized that the lifelike sensation could be used for something else…somewhere else. Cue the awkward phone call to Leonard asking him to come over and get the robot hand off of his penis. And the awkward trip to the hospital where the nurse announced Wollowitz’s ailment on the loudspeaker and then outsmarted them all by suggested the simply shut off the robot.
Penny, don’t preach
In the end, Penny managed to convince Sheldon that he shouldn’t procreate with Amy by threatening to call his mom. She even had a retort when Sheldon told her to go ahead, his mother was dying to have grandchildren. “Really?” she asked. “Your deeply religious born-again Christian mother wants a test tube baby born out of wedlock?” Point goes to Penny.
I can’t wait to see what else will happen with “Shamy”, and the scenes of Penny and Sheldon exercising together next week looked hysterical. Did you like the episode?
Finally, this interaction between Penny and Sheldon was the best of the night:
Penny: “Can I ask you a question?”
Sheldon: “Given your community college education, I encourage you to ask as many as possible.”
