You can’t take two steps before tripping over a new superhero movie these days. This year alone, I’m pretty sure there are exactly* a bajillion films currently in production.
But it wasn’t always this way. Before Superman got the ball rolling in 1978, nobody really considered the idea of taking a “nerdy” outlet like comics and turning them mainstream. Even afterward, it wasn’t until the late 80s-early 90s before comic-based movies really started to take off.
