Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Halifax is excitedly anticipating a special, day-long celebration of Canadian music icons, The Tragically Hip, on Saturday, Aug. 20, in the lead up to CBC’s live broadcast presentation of The Tragically Hip: A National Celebration. The live broadcast is of the Hip’s final concert on their Man Machine Poem tour taking place in Kingston, Ontario.
In partnership with The Tragically Hip and CBC, the concert will be live-steamed beginning at 9:30 p.m. on a big screen in Grand Parade Square, in front of City Hall at 1841 Argyle Street. This is part of a nationwide initiative to bring the music of The Tragically Hip to as many Canadians as possible, as the well-known and loved band winds down their final tour. The Downtown Halifax Business Commission is also hosting a number of other events throughout the day on Saturday, Aug. 20, as part of their Hey Man, Thanks: A celebration of Gord Downie and The Tragically Hip event, intended to celebrate all things Tragically Hip. Please note that Argyle Street, between Duke Street and Blowers Street, will be closed to vehicular traffic all day Saturday, Aug. 20, beginning at 1 p.m. through until the end of the concert at approximately 12 a.m. Pedestrian and emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
Halifax Transit is pleased to extend service on the Alderney Ferry route, between downtown Halifax and downtown Dartmouth, to accommodate the increased number of people anticipated to be travelling Saturday evening to attend this event.
Alderney Ferry service will operate on a regular Saturday schedule, on a 30-minute frequency departing from the Alderney Ferry Terminal on the :00 and :30, and from Halifax Ferry Terminal on the :15 and :45 past the hour, with the final trip from Halifax to Alderney departing at 12:45 a.m. The complete Saturday schedule can be found online at www.halifax.ca/transit/Schedules/documents/FerryAlderney.pdf.
