What is the Hubble Space Telescope?
The Hubble Space Telescope was launched initially in 1990, as we will see shortly, and it has been orbiting the earth ever since; as such, 2020 marked the 30th anniversary of the telescope. The Hubble Space Telescope orbits the earth approximately once every 95 minutes; this allows it to contribute a substantial amount of information about the solar system and space.
As the Hubble Space Telescope orbits the earth, it takes photographs of its surroundings; to date, according to NASA, it has contributed over one million photographs to the scientific community. This has provided an immense wealth of knowledge about the extraordinary sightings that occur out in the far depths of space.
The technology within the Hubble Space Telescope – despite being three decades old at this point – is still providing us with beautiful, high-quality photographs of our wider solar system. And, because the Hubble Space Telescope orbits above the earth’s atmosphere, it doesn’t suffer any interference from the atmosphere. This has always been a challenge faced by traditional telescopes – and, as such, the Hubble Space Telescope can reach out to distances that are simply unfathomable for many of us.

Just a few recent examples include stunning images of the birth and deaths of stars – even though these have occurred billions of light-years away from our own planet. Or, a little closer to home, the Hubble Space Telescope has even captured images of comets colliding with Jupiter’s atmosphere in a dramatic display.
Looking to the Future
The launch of the Hubble Space Telescope back in 1990 was an immense event and one that’s undeniably driven a new fascination with space for many of us. Indeed, in a recent interview with Betway Casino, one of the crew members responsible for the Hubble Space Telescope’s launch – Dr. Stevel Hawley – gave us all new insights into exactly what happened that day.
However, the technology – though still functioning – is long out of date. With this in mind, the Hubble Space Telescope’s long reign is coming to an end. As Hawley himself explained, “It has been revolutionary for astronomy. Far more so than at least I had imagined it could be. It was critically important.”
Of course, just because the Hubble Space Telescope will soon be enjoying a much-deserved retirement doesn’t mean that our exploration of space will die with it Its revolutionary contributions will be inherited by the Webb Space Telescope, a staggering device that’s half the size of a 737 aircraft and will orbit not the earth, but in quite the dramatic conclusion, the sun itself – the very heart of our solar system.
The Hubble Space Telescope and its discoveries have, for many of us, awakened a new fascination with outer space and allowed the general public to form a genuine connection through images and photos of the solar system that would never have before been possible. Indeed, the immense potential held by these solar telescopes is something that we never before could have even dreamed of – and what the Hubble has started, the Webb will only expand upon further.
