The Voice: Fantastic Four

In the first season, The Voice did what American Idol could never do – the contestants performed original songs and it wasn’t completely cheesy. In fact, they were actually pretty good. Not that “I’m at the top of the mountain, the journey was so amazing, this moment is the best, blah blah blah” crap Idol always forces finalists to warble. On top of the new material, all the contestants also performed duets with their coaches.

After watching all the performances, one thing was abundantly clear – all four of these people are incredibly talented. The level of talent The Voice ended up with has pretty much secured my opinion that this show is fresher, more exciting, and more interesting to watch than what Idol has become. Who to root for tomorrow night? I love Vicci’s powerful voice and Dia’s textured tone, so I’ll be happiest if one of those girls win.

Javier Colon (Team Adam) – Stitch By Stitch
This was Javier’s original song, and I thought it was pretty good. It wasn’t the absolute best song, and I don’t think he sounded as good as usual, but I think Javier has a great voice for radio.

Dia Frampton & Blake Shelton – I Won’t Back Down
I know I’m not Blake’s biggest fan, but I like Dia and I thought this duet was really cute. I loved their matching suits and sunglasses.

Vicci Martinez (Team Cee-Lo) – Baby I’m Afraid To Sleep
I like everyone left in the competition, but Vicci is my favorite. I just think she’s so damn good, and I really liked this performance.

Beverley McClellan & Christina Aguilera – Beautiful
I’m glad Christina decided to do this song with Beverly, because I just love this song. I played it over and over when it came out. This rendition was absolutely beautiful – no pun intended. Also, I really liked Christina’s hat.

Dia Frampton (Team Blake) – Inventing Shadows
Although I’m probably rooting for Vicci overall, I think Dia is most likely to make music I’d listen to in everyday life. The tone of her voice is beautiful, and I just know I’ll love the music she’s going to make.

Javier Colon & Adam Levine – Man in the Mirror
I thought this was a good song choice for Adam and Javier, since it suited both their voices very well. Actually, I kind of wish they’d done a Maroon 5 song since Javier would sound good on that, but this was also great. Javier sounded a lot better on this song than he did on his solo performance earlier in the evening.

Beverly McClellan (Team Christina) – Lovesick
I don’t know why, but I wasn’t expecting to like Beverly’s original song as much as I did the others. I was pleasantly surprised, though – I really enjoyed her performance. I also love how much fun Beverly always seems to be having on stage. Her confidence and energy is great.

Vicci Martinez & Cee Lo Green – Love is a Battlefield
I was surprised by this song choice, but with Cee Lo anything is possible. Like, children on stage dressed like warrior birds. That is possible. I love that Vicci seemed so comfortable with Cee Lo’s over the top stage style. She’s tiny, but holds her own on the stage. After that duet, I just have to root for Vicci. She’s never given a bad performance.

What did you think of the performances? Who do you think should win? And now that The Voice has all but run its course, do you think it’s ousted American Idol as the best singing competition on TV?
