The Voice – Knockout Part II

More knockout rounds! After tonight, each coach has five team members and we’ll move into live shows. The knockout round has been a welcome addition to the show, and I liked assessing the performances tonight. Click through for a recap! Team Christina Devyn DeLora singing “I Have Nothing” I thought Devyn did an OK job, but it was nothing special. She was no Whitney Houston, and there was no unique spin on the song. It felt like an average performance to me. vs. Laura Vivas singing “I Need To Know” However, Laura’s vibe isn’t my favorite and her song choice isn’t one I particularly like. The performance overall rubbed me the wrong way, even though the Spanish was pretty. It felt like a cruise ship singer’s performance, not a chart topping star. Winner: Devyn DeLora Adrianna Louise singing “Already Gone” Adrianna’s cover of “Already Gone” felt a bit forced and too stylized to me. Kelly Clarkson’s vocals just soar out of her naturally, and Adrianna’s felt pushed. But she had some good moments, and I think there’s definitely potential there. vs. Celica Westbrook singing “Never Say Never” I understand what Celica was going for by choosing a young song, but I don’t think it was challenging enough. It was fun and showed up of a cool, different side to Celica, but I don’t think it was the right song to show her off in 90 seconds. I preferred Celica, but I had a feeling Christina would connect more with Adrianna. Winner: Adrianna Louise Alessandra Guercio singing “Take a Bow” Alessandra has all the attitude of Rihanna’s split ends. This performance just lacked that edge, and vocally it wasn’t anything special – if anything, it was kind of a mess. vs. Dez Duron singing “Stuck On You” This song felt a bit sappy, but I think Dez has a star quality that can’t be denied. He’s young, he’s handsome, and he can sing. The performance wasn’t my favorite of the night, but I thought he was hands down the winner of this round. This kid could grab a lot of votes with that smile and that voice. Winner: Dez Duron Chevonne singing “Dancing With Myself” When I first saw Chevonne’s song choice I thought she was covering Robyn, but then I realized that’s “Dancing On My Own” – and I think that would have been a better fit. The performance was fun and energetic, but I don’t think it showcased her vocals as well as it could have. vs. De’Borah singing “You Found Me” In contrast, De’Borah diverged from the quirkiness she’s been known for and went for a more emotional, more powerful song that really showed off her voice. It was a smart decision and I thought she won what could have been a close call. Winner: De’Borah Aquile singing “Grenade” Aquile has a really effortless, smooth quality to his voice that I like. He’s not the best vocalist in the competition though, and there wasn’t anything different about him. vs. Sylvia Yacoub singing “Fighter” Singing one of Christina’s most difficult songs right in front of her is, for lack of a better word, ballsy. Sylvia is by no means Xtina, but she managed to pull off the song and you had to give her credit for her ambition and her vocal chops. Winner: Sylvia Yacoub Christina has curated a team of strong pop singers for herself, and though that’s not how the voting has gone in previous years I think they’re the right people for Christina to be coaching. I could see Dez or Adrianna going far. Team Blake Gracia Harrison singing “I Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing” I like Gracia, and I thought this song worked with the country twist she put on it. Gracia is a lovely singer, but I wish she’d worked in the yodeling to the song – it’s what makes her special. vs. Liz Davis singing “Gunpowder and Lead” I love this song, but singing Blake’s wife’s most well-known and bad-ass song was a risk. She had to hit all the notes, keep up with those quick lyrics, and pull off the attitude. She did, and for that I thought she deserved to move on through. Winner: Liz Davis Rudy Parris singing “Forever” Nooooo. Guys! Can we please ban Chris Brown covers on these shows? No one pay him any royalties ever please. Team SKEEZY. Also, this guy reminds me of the husband on The Big C. Anyway, personal issues with Chris Brown aside, the song choice was a mistake and the performance was a train wreck. vs. Terry McDermott singing “Maybe I’m Amazed” And then there was Terry, a true rocker who picked a difficult, killer song and blew it out of the water. I love this guy. Winner: Terry McDermott Colin McLoughlin singing “Breakeven (Fall to Pieces)” I like Colin and I like this song, but I knew that Colin would be facing an uphill battle paired up against Michaela. His performance just didn’t prove he has anything different to offer. vs. Michaela Paige singing “Love Is a Battlefield” Michaela could go far in this competition. She’s so self-assured for sixteen years old, and really knows who she is as an artist. She has a great voice and even more stage presence. There was just no contest here. Winner: Michaela Paige Julio Cesar Castillo singing “Somebody To Love” I was wondering how Julio would pull off a difficult Queen song but, no, it was just another Justin Bieber tune. I didn’t love the song choice, and was totally disinterested in the performance overall. vs. MarissaAnn singing “Lady Marmalade” I actually liked this song choice for MarissaAnn, because her voice reminded me a bit of Mya’s. She hit all the notes and oozed confidence on stage. I thought MarissaAnn was an easy pick for Blake, once again. Winner: Julio Cesar Castillo (Whaaa? This was a mistake, Blake. Julio is out of his league now.) Cassadee Pope singing “Payphone” I loved Cassadee in her blind audition, as well as Suzanna. I’m annoyed that Blake paired them up, because either of them certainly would have been better than Julio. I liked her choice of a recent Maroon 5 hit, because she could put her own twist on it. Cassadee is cute as a button, and when she got to the chorus she really shone. It was young and fun and showed a lot of personality. vs. Suzanna Choffel singing “Could You Be Loved” I love this song, but you don’t have to be a musician to know there’s not much to it. If you’re trying to show off your vocals, it’s not the song to sing. I appreciated that Suzanna didn’t fake a Jamaican accent like some people on reality singing shows have. It was a mellow performance, but it didn’t achieve what it needed to for her. It’s too bad, because I like her a lot. But that performance didn’t show off her skills. Winner: Cassadee Pope Blake’s team has shaped up to be surprisingly strong. I love Cassadee, Michaela, Terry and Liz. I don’t care for Julio, and I think it sucks that he’s around instead of Suzanna or MarissaAnn. What do you guys think? ...
