The Voice – Top 8 Performances

Guys, I think this might be the best season of The Voice yet. I really liked all the performances this week, and that’s not the first time this season that I’ve said that. I’m really into it. Team Adam – Amanda Brown singing “Someone Like You” Yes! This was a fantastic song for Amanda to do. She has the vocal chops to pull it off, but since she put an edgier rock spin on it, the performance wasn’t an Adele knock-off. I have such a girl-crush on Amanda. She’s talented, she owns the stage, and I think she should win the show. Team Cee Lo – Cody Belew singing “Somebody To Love” I liked this song a lot for Cody. He has a big voice and a lot of stage presence, so why not try and tackle the great Freddie Mercury? This performance had so much swagger. Freddie Mercury he is not, but I’m always impressed with how much control Cody has over his voice. I thought this was one of Cody’s best performances. The high note? He nailed it. *Sidebar: How come Christina criticizes Amanda for not having a clearly defined genre, but then praises Cody for just that? Oh right. Because she’s recruiting Cody as her gay BFF. Team Blake – Terry McDermott singing “Over” Terry finally goes for a contemporary song, and what does he do? He sings a Blake Shelton song. Sigh. I actually recognized this song and I do like it. But I’ve been waiting so long for Terry to show me what kind of music he’d want to be making. This isn’t it. That said, it was at least a step away from what he’s done every other week, and he remains an excellent singer. Team Adam – Melanie Martinez singing “Too Close” Melanie has been OK the past few weeks, but I still think she’s outstayed her welcome on this show. I still think she has a cool thing going on and could be popular with the same quirky teens that like Tavi Gevinson, but that doesn’t mean she belongs on The Voice anymore. I love this song and I think she did a decent job, but you can’t deny that Melanie does essentially the same thing every week. Team Christina – Dez Duron singing “U Smile” Dez is Christina’s only team member left, which I never would have expected. But the kid can sing. I actually think this song was a good idea for Dez, because he was able to sing it about eight million times better than The Biebs. This is how a MAN sings (and dresses), Justin! I thought this was a good performance. Team Cee Lo – Trevin Hunte singing “Greatest Love of All” Poor Trevin. Last week he went with something uptempo, and everyone hated it. But this song is sort of sappy and old-school, and I’m not sure it was the right choice for him. Remember “Vision of Love”? That’s where he should be. This was, sadly, pretty boring. Hopefully next week Trevin can find a song in his sweet spot for next week. Team Cee Lo – Nicholas David singing “What’s Going On” Oh come on, we were all thinking the blind thing, right? Anyway. I really like Nicholas, but I suppose it would be unfair for me to criticize Terry for sticking in the past and not Nicholas. He’s just awesome at these old school hits, but can he do anything else? Team Blake: Cassadee Pope singing “Are You Happy Now?” Cassadee has a similar vibe to Michelle Branch, so this was a great choice for her. Cassadee is like what Avril Lavigne could have been if Avril Lavigne weren’t awful. That’s a compliment. She’s got a great pop-rock vibe, a decent voice, and lots of stage presence. Rankings Amanda Brown Cody Belew Dez Duron Cassadee Pope Terry McDermott Trevin Hunte Nicholas David Melanie Martinez I don’t think there’s anyone left who is truly awful. For me, these artists separate into halves. The top four were good, and the bottom four were rather boring to me this week. If we were to eliminate two artists, I do think Melanie and Nicholas deserve to go. What do you guys think? ...
