Museums and galleries

Several museums across the province are open today for Heritage Day, many with free admission and special programming:

Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, 1675 Lower Water St., Halifax — Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., free admission. The museum just reopened Friday after a two-week closure. Exhibits include the Titanic collection, Halifax Explosion displays, and the Mi’kmaw exhibit.

Museum of Natural History, 1747 Summer St., Halifax — Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with Heritage Day programming and typically free admission. Currently featuring the Dinosaur Exploration 2 exhibit, plus Gus the gopher tortoise, Science on a Sphere, and Mi’kmaq artifacts.

Art Gallery of Nova Scotia — Open around 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with full galleries and exhibits.

Atlantic Canada Aviation Museum (near the airport) — Open approximately 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Ross Farm Museum, New Ross — Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. as part of Heritage Day events.

Museum of Industry, Stellarton — Open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with holiday programming and free admission.

Fundy Geological Museum — Open with Heritage Day activities and free admission events.

Skating

The Emera Oval is open today (weather permitting) with free skating and skate rentals. Always a good time, always free.

Sackville Snow Days

The 12th annual Sackville Snow Days wraps up today with events across Lower Sackville. The weekend has included skating, sledding, swimming, crafts, bouncy castles, movies and fireworks. Check sackvillebusiness.com/sackville-snow-days for what’s still on today.

Heritage Day community event

Free hot chocolate, hot dogs and face painting at St. Margaret’s Centre, 12 Westwood Blvd., Upper Tantallon from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., hosted by MLA Iain Rankin and MP Lena Metlege Diab.

Winter sportfishing

The annual winter sportfishing weekend runs through today. Residents and non-residents can fish in open winter sportfishing areas without a licence. Check the Nova Scotia Anglers’ Handbook online for regulations and open lakes.

Movies

The Park Lane movie theatre is open today (the mall itself is closed).

Explore the outdoors

Citadel Hill’s grounds and pathways are open for walking, though the buildings and exhibits inside are closed. You can still catch the noon gun. Point Pleasant Park, the Halifax waterfront boardwalk, and trails at Shubie Park and Sir Sandford Fleming Park are all free to explore year-round.
