Thousands of infant swings recalled after five reported deaths

Via Health Canada release:

Mattel has issued a recall for several models of the Fisher-Price Snuga Swings due to a significant suffocation hazard. This recall, which impacts Canada, the United States, and Mexico, follows reports of tragic incidents involving infants.

The Issue

Fisher-Price Snuga Swings are not designed for sleep. However, when infants are placed in the swings for sleep or additional bedding is added, the headrest and body support insert on the seat pad can increase the risk of suffocation. As of October 7, 2024, there have been five reported infant deaths linked to improper use of the swing for sleep. These incidents occurred when the product was used with bedding or while the baby was unsupervised.

Affected Products

This recall affects various models of the Fisher-Price Snuga Swings, available in different fabric colors and with assorted toy accessories. The model number can be found on the underside of the swing motor compartment. The following models are included in the recall:

What to Do

If you own any of the affected models, you should immediately stop using the product for sleep and ensure that no additional bedding materials are placed in the swing. To continue using the product safely, you must remove the headrest and body support insert from the seat pad. Mattel is offering a partial refund for these components.

Safety Reminder

Health Canada reminds consumers that it is prohibited to redistribute, sell, or even give away recalled products in Canada. Consumers should also report any incidents related to the product through the Consumer Product Incident Report Form.

Additional Information

The recall affects approximately 99,000 units in Canada, 2.1 million in the United States, and around 400 units in Mexico. These products were sold between 2012 and 2022, and were manufactured in both Mexico and China.
