Thundermaker Launches in Antigonish

Nova Scotians will be able to follow artist Alan Syliboy’s character, Little Thunder, as he learns about his Mi’kmaq identity.

Mr. Syliboy will launch his travelling exhibit, Thundermaker, at the Antigonish Town and County Library today, Oct. 7.

“I am pleased to share this story and my art and hope Nova Scotians will join me in experiencing Little Thunder’s big moment when he becomes the Thundermaker, and the boy becomes a man,” said Mr. Syliboy.

The multimedia art exhibit will be on display at the Antigonish Town and County Library until Oct. 24. It will travel to various public libraries throughout Nova Scotia until June 24.

“To give people an amazing opportunity to experience a Mi’kmaq legend first-hand is very exciting for us – books aren’t the only way to learn more about Mi’kmaq culture and sharing stories plays an important part in preserving the past,” said Eric Stackhouse, chief librarian for the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library and lead on the project.

Government contributed $7,400 to the exhibit.

“This project is a perfect partnership between the province and libraries that links art, culture and learning, making it available provincewide,” said Tony Ince, Minister of Communities, Culture and Heritage. “I wish Mr. Syliboy much success on his tour.”
