Transaction to buy tools ends with manhunt involving 7 police agencies

A seemingly ordinary transaction to purchase tools at Exit 19 in Salt Springs, Pictou County escalated into armed robbery and vehicle theft on November 24th, 2023. The buyer, who was acquainted with the seller, found himself at gunpoint during the roadside exchange. The armed seller demanded the buyer exit his vehicle, subsequently fleeing with it. This unexpected turn of events marked the beginning of a significant police investigation and manhunt.

The stolen vehicle was later spotted by the Westville Police Service on Acadia Avenue, travelling at high speed before crashing. The driver managed to escape on foot, prompting a widespread search.

On December 5th, a coordinated effort by multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Pictou County Integrated Street Crime Enforcement Unit, Pictou County District RCMP, Stellarton Police Service, Westville Police Service, New Glasgow Police Service, RCMP Synthetic Drug Unit, and RCMP Police Dog Services, led to the discovery of the stolen vehicle at a residence in Stellarton. However, when officers attempted to arrest the suspect, he fled on foot once again. After a brief chase, he was apprehended on Foord Street.

The suspect, identified as 40-year-old Darren Brent Snell, faces multiple charges, including robbery, pointing a firearm, possession of a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5000, resisting a peace officer, and possession contrary to a court order. Snell has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in Pictou Provincial Court on December 8th at 9:30 AM.
