Treats in Threes

Before heading off into the beautiful sunset that is a holiday weekend, I wanted to show you three of my favourite treats I’ve been over-indulging in lately.

The first product is this Duck Rillette made by Frederic Tandy of Charcuterie Ratinaud. This little jar of sumptuous, beautifully prepared meat – similar to a paté – goes a surprisingly long way and is worth every, single penny. It’s a perfect addition for an evening with company, on canapés, or just when you feel like indulging in something special. F. and I enjoyed some of it with this spread of cheese, crackers, and a glass of red wine. We had a nice sampling of it, too, and there is still 3/4 of the jar left! You can find Frederic’s products at the Halifax Seaport Farmers’ Market, Obladee Wine Bar, or by visiting his website: http://www.ratinaud.ca/

The next product, below, is Fox Hill’s seasonal Cranberry Quark, made only at Christmas and Thanksgiving each year. A lovely balance of autumnal spices, tart cranberries, and creamy quark, you should grab some while you can! A nice addition to Thanksgiving weekend brunch, perhaps? You can find Fox Hill’s products at their permanent stall at the Seaport Market (just inside and to the left of the main doors), online, or at their home base in the Annapolis Valley.

The third product, rather in the background of these photos, is a fragrant, soft, brie-like (in texture) cheese called Le Coutances, named after the town in Normandy, France. I’m not above buying food (or wine) for a pretty label and this cheese made me feel particularly nostalgic: I had no idea the town of Coutances even had their own cheese, but I spent a month just outside of it in 2008 volunteering on the beautiful property of Le Castel, through Help Exchange. Rough, huh? Conveniently – label and nostalgia aside – I loved the flavour of this cheese. The rind will almost knock you over with its aroma, but inside is a silky, delicately flavoured cheese. I’ve had it au naturel, as well as baked with garlic, pepper, olive oil, and Herbs de Provence. It bakes down beautifully, and at about $5 at Sobeys, what’s not to love?

This weekend is Thanksgiving weekend in Canada, so wishing everyone (Canadian and non!) a weekend of happy, thankful, and full-to-the-brim bellies.
