Treaty Day celebrations on Monday, October 1

Residents and visitors are invited to help celebrate Treaty Day, marking the 25thanniversary of Mi’kmaq History Month on Monday, Oct. 1.

As proclaimed in 1993 by then Premier John Savage and Mi’kmaq Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy, Treaty Day marks the beginning of Mi’kmaq History Month in Nova Scotia.

What: Veterans Parade of Honour

Where: Starts at St. Mary Basilica and ends at Grand Parade Square.

When: 10:45 a.m.

What: Flag Raising Ceremony

Where: Grand Parade, Halifax City Hall

When: 11:15 a.m.

As part of the celebration, the public is invited to an advanced viewing of the Legacy Space in Halifax City Hall between 10 a.m. and noon. Created in partnership with The Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund, the space will be a safe, welcoming place where conversations about the past, present and future will be facilitated and encouraged. The space will serve as a symbol and reminder for Halifax Regional Council of the important work around reconciliation.
