Three Accidents Last Night, One Charged

Three serious accidents last night send seven to hospital and leave one in police custody.

 
At 7:10 pm officers responded to a 2 vehicle motor vehicle accident at the corner of Wright Ave and Burnside Dr in Dartmouth. Both vehicles, one car and one SUV, had extensive damage and the car had been pushed in to the light standard at this location. HRM Fire Dept also attended the scene and assisted with removing two adults from the car that was in to the light standard. The two adults from the car,  a 31 year old male and a 25 year old female, were taken to hospital by ambulance with serious but not life threatening injuries. The SUV had one adult and two children in the vehicle. The adult, a 40 year old female was not injured. The two children, boys aged 9 and 7, were taken to hospital for precautionary reasons with minor injuries. The incident remains under investigation by Halifax Regional Police.
 
 
At 7:47 pm members of Halifax Regional Police responded to a motor vehicle – pedestrian accident in the 0-100 block of Purcell’s Cove Rd. Two pedestrians were crossing Purcell’s Cove Rd when they were struck by a vehicle travelling outbound. It appears that the inbound traffic had stopped for the pedestrians to cross but the driver of the outbound vehicle did not see them and struck them as they crossed. The pedestrians were not in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. The two who were struck, a 77 year old female and an 81 year old female, were taken to hospital with injuries that are considered life threatening. The driver of the vehicle was not injured. This accident is still under investigation by Halifax Regional Police.
 
Update: The 2 females who were struck by the vehicle have had their injuries upgraded to serious but NOT life threatening. 
 
At approximately 7:30 pm members of Halifax Regional Police responded to the intersection of Windsor St and Connaught St for a report of an accident between a bicyclist and a pedestrian. Witnesses at the scene state that the cyclist was travelling north on Windsor St and proceeded through a red light at the intersection without stopping and struck the pedestrian who was crossing in the crosswalk. The pedestrian, a 56 year old female, was thrown in the air and struck her head as she hit the pavement. She was transported to hospital by ambulance with injuries that are considered life threatening. The cyclist remained on scene where he was arrested by police. The 49 year old male is still in police custody and will appear in Halifax court on February 23, 2012 to face charges of violation of a court order as well as numerous charges under the Motor Vehicle Act.
