The Halifax Regional Municipality is providing residents the following update on impacts from a construction crane at 3644 Dutch Village Road in Halifax.
Evacuation area
At approximately 4:40 p.m. today, Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE) were called to assess the stability of a construction crane at 3644 Dutch Village Road. The crane was upright but deemed to be unstable.
Halifax Regional Police (HRP) were called to the scene and blocked local streets in the area. As such, residents are advised to avoid the area of Dutch Village Road in the vicinity of Titus Street, Main Avenue, McFatridge Road, Alma Crescent, Andrew Street, Deal Street and Percy Street.
Safety officers from the Province of Nova Scotia’s Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration remain on the scene and are being supported by HRFE and HRP.
As of 7:30 p.m., the scene has been secured and is considered safe. A repair plan for the crane is currently being developed in consultation with the crane company. HRFE and HRP, along with personnel from the Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, will remain on site overnight to monitor the situation and ensure that conditions remain stable.
Approximately 100 people have been evacuated from the area as a precaution and residents are asked to avoid the area until further notice.
Registration centre
The Beechville Lakeside Timberlea Community Centre (1492 St. Margarets Bay Road) is currently open as a registration centre with the Red Cross for residents evacuated from the Dutch Village Road area.
If enough residents require overnight accommodations, an evacuation centre will be established at this location. Residents needing assistance may proceed directly to the community centre to register with the Red Cross.
Halifax Transit impacts
As Dutch Village Road is closed between Rufus Street and Alma Crescent, routes 2, 3, 4, 135, 136, 137 and 138 are on detour until further notice.
