Upcoming Activities at Balmoral Grist Mill and Sutherland Steam Mill

This summer, visitors will have an opportunity to experience what it was like at mills in the Tatamagouche, Colchester Co., area.

Balmoral Grist Mill in Balmoral Mills, and Sutherland Steam Mill Museum in Denmark, are hosting activities to learn about living and working in the late 19th century.

Author Linda Little will read from her new novel, Grist, at the setting that gave it life, Balmoral Grist Mill.

“Balmoral Grist Mill is an inspirational spot, the sort of place that dares you to build a story around it,” said Ms. Little. “The sound of wooden cogs on wooden gears and the aroma of drying oats is not something we encounter in modern life. I am thrilled to be able to read in this special venue. It is a true homecoming for my characters.”

The reading is Sunday, June 22, at 1:30 p.m., and admission is free.

“The mill museums near Tatamagouche are excellent places for people of all ages to get an idea of the innovation and technology that Nova Scotians depended on in that time,” said Communities, Culture and Heritage Minister Tony Ince. “I congratulate Ms. Little on her new novel, and I wish success to the team at the museums during the busy summer season.”

Sutherland Steam Mill Museum will host woodworking workshops this summer with Jonathan Otter. After a successful pilot last year, the museum is offering a variety of workshops that are almost entirely hands-on using hand tools.

The first workshop is Friday, June 27, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students can learn to cut and glue through dovetail joints, cut and smooth curves and finish a small step stool. Students can take their project home when they are done.

Sutherland Steam Mill Museum is located at 3169 Highway 326, Denmark. For details and a complete list of courses go to,
