Upcoming traffic changes for first segment of Vernon-Seymour bikeway

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents and motorists of upcoming traffic changes in an effort to promote safe cycling and allow Vernon Street to become the very first designated local street bikeway in the region.

The first segment of the bikeway is complete, meaning traffic volume and speed will be managed along the corridor in an effort to promote and maintain safe and comfortable cycling for residents of all-ages-and-abilities.

Regulatory signage indicating ‘No through traffic, except bicycles’, will be posted on Vernon Street tomorrow at the intersection of Jubilee Road (both northbound and southbound). Vehicles will not be able to travel straight, and instead will need to turn left or right on to Jubilee Road at this intersection. Bicycles can proceed straight along the corridor.

These changes were approved by Regional Council in May 2018 as part of the Vernon-Seymour Local Street Bikeway project. Implementation of these bikeways will help develop a core cycling network, make it easier for residents to choose cycling, improve road safety, and attain the model-share targets identified in the Regional Plan.

When these changes take effect, residents and motorists are encouragedto use alternative routes.
