Update on Shelburne Harbour Aquaculture Site

Government continues to monitor the situation at an aquaculture site in Shelburne Harbour, that reported damage on Feb. 15, due to a major storm.

The site has experienced a higher than expected rate of mortality since the storm. Dead fish from the site will not enter the human food chain.

As a precaution, aquatic animal health staff of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture took samples of the dead fish. No reportable disease was found.

“We continue to receive updates from the operator as we monitor the situation and will update the public as the situation warrants,” said Fisheries and Aquaculture Minister Keith Colwell.

Information on the province’s aquaculture regulations is available at http://novascotia.ca/fish/aquaculture.
