Using fireworks on Canada Day? Remember to be both courteous and safe, Dartmouth, N.S.

RCMP in Nova Scotia are reminding residents to consider their neighbours and their own safety when using fireworks this summer.

‘Detonating fireworks always has the potential to disturb the peace and tranquillity of a residential area’ says Sgt.

Al LeBlanc of the Nova Scotia RCMP. ‘So before you set off that pack of fireworks late at night, remember that not everyone may appreciate the noise.’

Disturbing the peace of a residential area with fireworks can be a violation of noise by-laws in many jurisdictions. In order to avoid this, the RCMP recommends that citizens plan ahead and alert their neighbours before setting fireworks off. Providing details such as the time and duration of the firework display is not only courteous, it will allow neighbours to raise any concerns they may have before the festivities begin.

Additionally, the RCMP reminds citizens that environmental conditions should also be taken into consideration before fireworks are set off. This is especially true during the dry summer months when the risk of forest fires is high and burn bans are in effect.
