When we decided to get a dog almost six years ago, we were looking for a medium sized, hypo-allergenic, non-shedding dog. What did we get? Wacko… a large, shedding dog to whom I am allergic. Big fail on our part for not doing the research needed to get the right type of dog for our family. But in the end it was a win because we all love Wacko (whose real name is Bella) despite her quirks and quarks and shedding hair. Oh, and that time she ate my BlackBerry.
Deciding to get a pet is more than picking out a breed or a name. It’s also about keeping your pet healthy so that the little (or big) darling can live a long, happy life. Regular vet visits are key in maintaining good health for your pet.
Now that spring has finally arrived here on the East Coast of Canada, it’s time to start thinking about keeping your pet free from fleas and ticks. Last summer was our fist summer dealing with ticks. We moved just outside of Halifax where ticks are plentiful and with a black, hairy dog, we quickly learned that we have to be vigilant to keep ourselves and Wacko safe from disease and infestation as bites can spread many different harmful diseases.
According to Canadian researchers, tick populations have grown 10 times over in the past two decades within Canada.
There are a variety of different types of fleas and ticks that can bite your pet and spread many types of diseases, some of them very serious and life-threatening.
And of course, let’s not forget about those lovely little fleas that like to feed on our pets.
- Fleas can live up to 100 days and can lay up to 50 eggs a day.
- A single flea could bite up to 400 times per day.
- Dogs can be allergic to flea saliva and can result in bald spots from scratching and chewing their fur.
- Fleas don’t just cause itching, discomfort and open sores from flea allergy dermatitis, they can also be a source of tapeworms, and cause anemia and household infestations.
Are you itchy yet? I know I am. So now is a good time to visit your vet and talk about what flea and tick treatment is best for your pet. Ask about how to reduce the chance of your pet even being bitten.
