We enjoyed Tomavinos!

Tomavinos restaurant

Benny (Benedetta) and Reed Holmes, editors of the Bedford Beacon, are loyal fans of Tomavinos.

Open since April 2009 Tomavinos restaurant has met with raving reviews.

Located at 1475 Bedford Highway in the Canada Trust plaza, customers have claimed Tomavinos is the best restaurant in Bedford.

The original Tomavinos is located in Halifax, at Hollis and South streets. Established in 1989, it was voted Best Pizza in HRM by the Fringe Society Summer 2006.

Judging by what we have seen and eaten so far, I would have to agree.

Let’s get one thing straight. I do not like sloppy, cheesy, americanized pizza. I was born in Rome, Italy and lived on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in Tuscany. I grew up eating the best pizza and pasta in the world.

In Italy, you can walk into any “bar” and order a slice of pizza to go. Always a very affordable and satisfying meal.

When Tomavinos opened its doors we were hopeful that maybe, just maybe, we had finally found a restaurant that makes good pizza.

And we were pleasantly surprised.

Tomavinos offers delicious pizza, is a licenced facility and offers pick-up, delivery and dine-in serving. The restaurant itself seats about 20 customers.

The pizzeria offers whole wheat or gluten free crust, with a wide choice of toppings.

For vegetable lovers, the pizza primavera is made with a special tomato sauce and your choice of three vegetables.

Pizza con carne, for meat lovers, is made with tasty homemade meatballs, Italian sausage and pepperoni.

And these are just two of many pizzas one can order.

Not in the mood for pizza? Try their spaghetti with meat sauce, or their meat lasagna, both served with garlic bread. The chicken parmagiana is served with pasta, and all can be served with one of their many salads.

One evening my husband Reed and I were on our own, without the kids. We decided to head over to Tomavinos. But instead of ordering take-out, as we usually do, we decided to dine in.

We headed to the back of the restaurant and sat down at one of the little wooden tables.

The atmosphere was modest, but warm and cozy.

As an appetizer Reed ordered a caprese salad. The tomatoes were fresh and the mozzarella was tasty. A simple, yet delicious, classic dish.

I ordered a glass of dry red wine, and when it was served, it was just to my liking.

I also ordered the mussels, fresh from the sea. Not only did we eat up all the mussels, but there was not one drop of sauce left on my plate.

We ordered a vegetarian piazza with hot banana peppers, green olives and sundried tomatoes.

The thin crust was delicious and crispy. Just the way we like it.

We enjoyed delicious food in a nice atmosphere, and after a very affordable $42.32 bill, we left Tomavinos with smiles on our faces and full bellies.
