Wednesday’s Music: an unlikely mix of Taylor Swift Kurt Cobain

L-A: Ally was home with a sick baby and had an event this evening. When I told her not to worry about the blog or an RSVP to an event, she almost cried and then begged me to take her to Vegas (which, depending on my lottery ticket, could happen this weekend). I thought I’d try to cheer her up by talking about the Academy of Country Music Awards. Apparently that happened recently. But when I googled it, I didn’t know who anyone was, save for Reba McIntrye (she’s one of those singers I know of, but couldn’t name one song) and Taylor Swift.  So, for Ally’s sake, a picture of Swifty at the awards:

pretty + boring

Oh sure, it’s pretty. But not terribly exciting. Certainly not this exciting:

oh golly! You like me?

Question for those of you who watch awards for country music: does Taylor Swift go all Drew-Barrymore-golly-gee-whiz-you-like-me every time she wins an award? I hope not. Few things annoy me more than someone, particularly someone who knows exactly how well their albums are selling, who gets so completely shocked and flustered that they could possibly win an award. Sure, be humble, be grateful, but don’t pretend like you didn’t think you had a shot. That shit is for folks like the 13 year old who wasn’t nominated for an Oscar.

Anyway. /rant.

On to music memories.

Yeppers. Yesterday was 17 years since Kurt Cobain died. This makes me feel a bit sad, a bit old and a bit nostalgic. The old and the nostalgic often happens when I think about “being there” when certain music first came out (as much as one can be there when they live in the furthest reaches of the country…I mean, ye gads, I was off in Nfld back then, with only MuchMusic and Sassy magazine as my window on the world that existed off of the island I lived on).

(Dear Dave Grohl: that turtleneck is not okay. Not even for 1994).

Anyway, part of me still digs Kurt’s style. Especially his striped shirt. Not like that’s a surprise. I’m stoked that stripey shirts are “on trend” this spring. The moment I get myself a paying gig (please please let that be in approximately eight weeks), I am STOCKING UP on nautical stripes. That way, when the trend passes and you can no longer find nautical stripes in stores, I will totally be set for years. I have a giant cedar lined trunk just waiting to be filled with nautical stripes.

Anchors! Stripes! I even want to buy the font! (which, I believe, is Archer)

Let’s make that shit happen.

p.s. Ally and Anthony were all over Mildred Pierce on the Facebook, so I’m checking it out. I want to love it, but so far…enh.
