Weekend Wrap-up Jan. 18-22

It’s that time of year to Get Crafty and that’s just our type! May you have the Happiest of Lunar New Years, take advantage of Free Library Activities, and Encourage Mighty Minds.
1. Good craftorning! Okay, so that doesn’t have the same ring to it as “crafternoon”, but hey, making neat things at 10 AM is as good a time as any. While you shop at Michaels, they craft for a couple hours. It’s for kids 3 and up, a guardian has to remain on the premises, and registration is not necessary—if you so happen to be shopping in Bayers Lake on Saturday, drop them on in. This weekend’s project is a Craftstick Cocoa Mug and the fun only costs $2, materials included.
2. Go celebrate the Lunar New Year at Pier 21! Learn about various Asian traditions, participate in workshops, enjoy yourselves some live performances. A family day pass is $30, covers two adults and three children, and the museum is open from 10 to 5.
3. For something free and priceless, crafty and kind, take children of any age to a library to create Valentines for Valiant Veterans! In Musquodoboit on at 2-8 on Thursday, 10-5 on Friday, 10-2 on Saturday, drop in and give someone’s heart an advanced warming. For those not in Musquodoboit at the right time, other library programs of note are I Heart Books — a celebration of family literacy for ages 3 and up at Halifax Central Library at 2:30 on Sunday, and Learn Chess with Your Child geared for kids in grades 1 and 2 at Alderney Gate at 1:30 on Saturday.
4. Grab your family, friends, or Guiding unit and join the Girl Guides of Canada Nova Scotia Council community to Shine a Light on Mental Health, the launch of GGC’s new program designed to help girls develop positive mental health skills, resiliency, and to understand stigma. It’s an outdoor event and there will be hot chocolate—a Guiding staple—so dress warmly before heading to the park behind Acadia Hall in Lower Sackville from 6-7 on Saturday. As well as that hot chocolate, there will be guest speakers and candles lit in efforts to bring awareness to the importance of building positive mental health in girls.
5. Don’t forget, if there’s snow on the ground, there are shoes in Shubie! Every weekend from 10-1, weather pending, except February 4th, at Shubenacadie Wildlife Park.
