Weekend Wrap-up: June 7-8, 2014

June-7-8

1. It’s Doors Open Halifax! The Society is happy to present a roster of 40 venues for this year’s event. Buildings in Halifax, Dartmouth and Bedford will open their doors to the public for free and invite them to view interiors not usually open.

People will have a chance to explore places of worship, university buildings, hotels, performance facilities, retirement living facilities, new developments and iconic heritage buildings. Not only that, kids will love a chance to see the inner workings of a fire hall, explore sea life at an ocean sciences centre, ride through a bus wash and be transported back in time at different stops on the map. Some of the city’s most intriguing buildings, including the famous Old Town Clock, will be open to the public for this special weekend.

2. The Little FIsher’s Club is putting on a Fishing Derby! Head to Kerney Lake this weekend and have a chance to catch a fish! The lake has been stocked for this event so all little fisher-people should have a good chance of catching something!

3. Breathing Space (Halifax) Yoga and Wellness Centre is having a free kids yoga class taught by Christy this Saturday from 1:30-2:30pm, Ages 5-12. Kids love yoga to explore movement of their bodies, connect to their inner creativity and have fun!

4. What better way to celebrate the start of the summer than to join the annual pumpkin planting days at Ross Farm Museum? Bring the children and let them plant a pumpkin seed, then they can return in the fall and harvest their pumpkin. It’s such a fun way to mark both the beginning of the growing season, and then the end, in the fall!

5. Bike Week begins this weekend and there are lots of great events happening all week long. Here are a few on this weekend!

The Family Bike Rodeo: Fun for the whole family! Stop at different stations along the Bissett Lake Trail and get your bike checked, shined and ensure your helmet fits properly! Finish the ride with valet bike parking, grab a snack and do some art!

Indoor BMX Jam: Come ride “Street” style obstacles and help us advance our dream of an indoor BMX park! All ages and skill levels are welcome, and some of Nova Scotias most talented riders will be throwing down their best moves. BMX prizes from Sportwheels are to be awarded for various reasons throughout the day.

MEC Bikefest: Sands at Salter, Halifax Waterfront. At MEC Bikefest there is something for everyone: dozens of informative clinics, kids’ activities, bicycle demos, MEC Bike Swap, the latest gear from bike retailers and manufacturers, group rides, a bicycle donation drop-off, community cycling groups, gear giveaways, and so much more. Come join us and make it the best bicycle bash in town.

6. World Ocean’s Day! Discovery Centre is celebrating World Ocean’s Day on Sunday with a slew of activities at the Centre. What is the best part? You can visit them for FREE as their valued partners, JASCO and VEMCO,  have sponsored this special event.
