Weekend Wrap-up: Sept 8-9, 2012

After the first week back at their desks most kids will probably be enthusiastic to get out and enjoy some of the fun activities that are on the go!

1. Come and immerse yourself in ‘All Things Italian’ and celebrate Italian culture! This year’s annual Italian Weekend Festival will be held at the Italian Centre on Agricola Street and includes food, beverages, music, bocce, face painting and games, along with information on cooking & language classes! 2. Do your kids love picking berries in the wild? Karen Harper (Plant Community Ecologist) is going to give the Young Naturalists Club a presentation on trees, shrubs and berries. They will learn some interesting facts about how trees and shrubs form the structure of the forest and provide habitat for animals. They will also find out how to identify berries that we can pick around Halifax! 3. Calling all reptile fans! Come and meet the exotic animals of Maritime Reptile Zoo and Little Ray’s Reptile Zoo at the Reptile Expo! They will feature a wide array of reptiles and other exotic species, including pythons, crocodilians, tortoises, tarantulas, scorpions…and much more!  Have your picture taken with your favorite reptile. Bring your young people to the Children’s Corner for coloring and games. This event is fun for the whole family and there is something for everyone! 4. Get out your bikes and blades, the streets will be wide open! Switch Open Street Sundays is a transformative initiative that enables people to engage with the street and explore alternative modes of transportation in comfort and safety. On Sunday, a 2km route on the Halifax peninsula will be closed to vehicular traffic from 9am to 2pm and open to walkers, runners, bikers, in-line skaters, strollers, dancers and much more. 5. The NBA 3X tour will make a stop at the Emera Oval in Halifax on September 8-9. NBA3X is a free, interactive fan experience, including a 3 on 3 tournament, slam-dunk competitions and three-point contests. As an added treat for basketball fans, the Halifax stop will feature an appearance by NBA champion Joel Anthony of the Miami Heat and the chance to see the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship trophy.
