Lots of new things going on…..
1) Via the Spryfield and District Business Commission: 
Central Spryfield Elementary is holding a fundraiser on May 15 from 5:30-7:00pm. It will be a Family Fun Night to raise money for a school wide trip to Bayside Camp in June.
The school is in need of donations of beverages, raffle basket items, and funds to rent equipment.

2) Events at the Captain William Spry Library

3) Soup’s On
No cost, all welcome for a weekly community lunch. Sponsored by Hand in Hand, Chebucto West Community Health board, and the Salvation Army. 
At the Salvation Army Spryfield Family Resource Centre on Herring Cove Road near Dentith, 12 noon to 1:30pm. 
Homemade soup and sandwiches will be served. 
Every Monday, with the exception of March 11, April 21, and May 19. 
4) The Urban Farm of Spryfield – Plant Sale and Seedy Saturday
    When – Saturday May 10th, 2014
    ​Where – Captain William Spry Community Center
​Do you Love to garden?  Then take in this great fundraising event.  You can get good quality sees, plants from local gardens and activities for children.  The Spryfield Urban Garden teaches people hoe to grow their own vegetables throughout the spring, summer and early fall.

5) Spryfield Community Clothing Swap
    When – Saturday, June 7th, 2014 – 10am to 4pm
    Where – Chebucto Connections – 531 Herring Cove Rd.
In conjunction with 100in1Day Halifax, Chebucto Connections Timebank is planning a Community Clothing Swap.  If you have donations of New or Slightly Used Clothing (Please make sure they are washed) that you would like to donate, you can drop these off at Chebucto Connections Mondays to Friday between 9am and 4pm until the day before the event. (Please no undergarments, socks or swimwear.)

6) 100in1day Halifax Workshop

100in1Day Halifax is a citizen-driven festival that will unite people across the city to make Halifax a better place by creating small acts of positive changes or interventions.

7) Spryfield Community Event Celebrating our Diversity
    When – Saturday, May 24th – 4 to 6pm
    Where – Spryfield Lions Club – Spryfield Lions Club, 111 Drysdale Rd., (above the Spryfield Lions Rink)
The Ethiopian Oromo Community of Spryfield invites you to join then for an afternoon of cultural food, fashion and music.  All proceeds from the fundraising event will go towards the renovation of a 900 student elementary school in Haro Bigilaal, Ethiopia.

8) Youth Engagement for Non-Profits Workshop
    When – May 21st – 9am to 1pm
    Where – Captain William Spry Center – 16 Sussex St., Hfx
The Community Sector Council of Nova Scotia is partnering with Heartwood Center for Community Youth Development to provide non-profit organizations with a half day workshop focused on increasing an organizations capacity to meaningfully engage youth.

9) Pathways to Education Spryfield is seeking Used Prom Dress Donations
    Drop Off/Pick up Deadline – May 5th, 2014
    Drop Off Location – Hillcrest Volkswagen – 3154 Robie St., Hfx or Chebucto Connections – 531 Herring Cove Rd.  
If you are not able to drop them off, please let us know and we can arrange to pick them up.  Please call 477-064 to make arrangements.
Pathways is seeking you help to collect used prom dresses for our first, ever graduating class. As most folks know, graduation can be expensive and this program can be one way to remove some of the financial stress put on students.  
10) Chebucto Connections Annual Raffle Draw – Tickets $2/ea

Chebucto Connections annual raffle draw is still on, so get your tickets now.  Tickets can be purchased from the Chebucto Connections office at 531 Herring Cove Rd, any of our staff members or board of directors.

11) Legal Aid – Every Second Friday at Chebucto Connections
Do you have questions or problems with CPP Disability, Income Assistance, Employment Insurance, Housing Grants, Landlord/Tenant relationships? An experienced Lawyer will meet with you privately to discuss your problems and provide free legal service if needed. Effective February 14, 2014, Nova Scotia Legal Aid will offer legal aid services in Spryfield at the Chebucto Connections Office located at 531 Herring Cove Road every second Friday. Upcoming dates are April 25; May 9; May 23; June 6; June 20; July 4; July 18. To set up an appointment please call 420-3450 and ask for an appointment at the Spryfield Office. Nova Scotia Legal Aid will also accept walk-in clients. You can also check out their site for more information at www.nslegalaid.ca. 
12) “Capitol One – Race for Kids 2014” – The Boys & Girls Club of Spryfield Fundraiser

“Grown Ups Play. Kids Win!”  Teams of four compete in zany, challenging check points set along the race course.  These challenges and check point locations are kept secret until race day to make it fair for everyone. 
All adults can participate regardless of fitness or skill level.  Also join the after part for food, drink, entertainment and awards.
13) Business Training Courses offered through Spryfield and District Business Commission, commencing the week of May 5th and running for 11 consecutive weeks. Specifics on the start date, day and times are in the attachment. Specifics on the start date, day and time of the Social Media for Beginners program will be determined shortly. Please contact Bruce Holland if you’re interested. To date over 100 people have participated in these courses with no cost to them other than their time.

14) New Backlands Coalition to host three ‘Backlands 360’ walks on Saturday, May 3, 2014
The Backlands Coalition invites all interested Nova Scotians to participate in an afternoon of guided walks and discussions on Saturday, May 3, organized as part of the annual Jane’s Walk events across Canada and around the world. The ‘Backlands 360’ walks aim to raise awareness about the importance of the Backlands, a unique 1,300-hectare urban wilderness area west of the Halifax peninsula and bordered by Purcell’s Cove Road, Williams Lake Road, Herring Cove Road and Powers Pond.
Saturday, May 3, 2014, 1:00 – 5:00 pm (rain or shine)

15) The Spryfield and District Business Commissions 2014 Annual General Meeting and Business Awards will be held on Thursday, June 5, 2014. There will be a reception at 6:00p.m. at The Spryfield Golden Age Social Centre, 212 Herring Cove Road.
 
The guest speaker this year will be Mr. Peter Polley, Founder and President of the Polycorp Group of Companies, a local development company and commission member.
 
Polycorp developed the “Ravenscraig” development on the Williams Lake Road. Mr. Polley will share his experiences as a builder in the Spryfield area and talk about two new large developments they are presently working on in the area and how they plan to partner in a significant recreational development in Spryfield.
