Today Nova Scotia honours Joseph Willie Comeau, an Acadian from Clare in Digby County who spent nearly six decades in public life. He was first elected to the provincial legislature in 1907, won nine elections, got appointed to the Senate in 1948, and served there until he died in 1966 at 89. Along the way he was a teacher, a businessman, and a father of 16. Not a bad run.
Looking for things to do today? We’ve got you covered, here
Need food?
The big grocery chains are all closed today. Sobeys, Superstore, Costco and Walmart have their doors locked. But several independent markets should have you covered:
Gateway Meat Market, Main St., Dartmouth: 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Kingswood Market, 1210 Hammonds Plains Rd., Hammonds Plains: 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Dave’s Fruit & Vegetable Market, 322 Main St., Dartmouth (Normally open Mondays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.)
Luke’s Small Goods, 2393 Agricola St., Halifax (Normally open Mondays 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.)
Avery’s Farm Market — multiple locations including Beaver Bank, Lower Sackville and Kearney Lake Rd. (Normally open Mondays)
Noggins Corner Farm Market, 50 Gary Martin Dr., Bedford (Normally open Mondays 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.)
Most drugstores are also open if you’re in a pinch.
Holiday hours may differ. We recommend calling ahead to confirm before heading out.
Need a drink?
Every NSLC location is closed. Agency stores are open though, and most craft brewery taprooms and private liquor retailers will be serving.
Want to go shopping?
You’re out of luck. Halifax Shopping Centre, Mic Mac Mall, Sunnyside Mall, Bedford Place Mall, Scotia Square and Park Lane are all shut down. The one exception is the movie theatre at Park Lane, which is open.
Getting around
Halifax Transit buses are running on a holiday schedule. The Alderney ferry is operating every 30 minutes. First boat leaves Dartmouth at 7:30 a.m., last one leaves Halifax at 11:45 p.m. No Woodside ferry today. The silver lining: on-street paid parking is free.
Garbage and recycling
No collection today. If you normally have Monday pickup, your alternate day was Saturday, Feb. 14. The Otter Lake facility, Materials Recovery Facility and Municipal Recycling Facility are all closed today but were open Saturday. The Household Special Waste Depot was closed Saturday too, it reopens Saturday, Feb. 21 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
City services
All Halifax Public Library branches are closed. The 311 contact centre is closed for regular service but you can still report urgent issues by phone or email at contactus@311.halifax.ca. In-person customer service centres are closed too. Everything’s back to normal Tuesday.
Most municipal recreation facilities are closed, but the Emera Oval is open if the weather cooperates.
Federal services
Heritage Day is provincial, not federal. Canada Post is delivering mail, post offices are open, and Service Canada is running regular hours. Phone companies, railways and airlines are unaffected.
