What’s open, what’s closed on Natal Day 2021

Groceries

Most grocery stores will be open but may be operating on reduced hours. Those will vary from store to store, so make sure to check your local location.

NSLC stores will be open but will be operating on limited hours.

Malls will all be operating on reduced hours.

The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents of the following municipal program and service level adjustments over the upcoming Natal Day long weekend:

Solid Waste Collection and Facility Hours

No municipal solid waste collection service will take place on Natal Day, Monday, Aug. 2.

Curbside collection of garbage, organics or recyclables normally scheduled for Monday, Aug. 2 will occur on the preceding Saturday, July 31. Residents are reminded that collection service can begin as early as 7 a.m.; to ensure pick up, residents may place materials curbside the evening prior to collection day.

The Otter Lake Waste Management Facility, the Halifax recycling facility and municipal composting facilities will be closed on Monday, Aug. 2, but will be reopen for regular service on Saturday, July 31 and Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Halifax Transit Bus and Ferry Services

Halifax Transit buses will be operating on holiday service on Monday, Aug. 2.

The Alderney Ferry service will run at half-hour frequency on Monday, Aug. 2 – the first crossing will depart the Alderney terminal at 7:30 a.m. and the final crossing will depart the Halifax terminal at 11:45 p.m. There will be no Woodside ferry service on Monday, Aug. 2.

Recreation Facilities, Programs and Services

All municipal beaches will remain open with lifeguard supervision on Monday, Aug. 2. All splash pad locations will be open on Monday, Aug. 2. For a complete list of supervised beaches, information on extended splash pad hours and up-to-date beach closures, click here.

Residents are reminded that the Halifax Common Pool will remain closed for the rest of the summer due to ongoing repair work. Work on the Centennial Pool is ongoing, and the pool is expected to reopen in September.

The Emera Oval will be open on Monday, Aug. 2. A detailed schedule can be found here. Equipment lending will be open 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting.

Residents are reminded they may continue to use REC at Home which offers a variety of activities that you can enjoy with your family – from arts and crafts, to at-home workouts.

Note: Many other municipally-operated recreation facilities will be closed on Monday, Aug. 2. Residents are advised to call ahead to their respective facility for operating hours and program information. Contact information for municipally-operated facilities is online.

Parking

On-street parking meters will be free on Monday, Aug. 2. Motorists are reminded to abide by other posted signage, including no-parking zones.

Customer Contact Centres

The 311 Contact Centre will be operating on regular hours on Monday, Aug. 2 (from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.).

The two Customer Service Centres that provide in-person access to municipal services and payments will be closed on Monday, Aug. 2, and will reopen for regular business hours on Tuesday, Aug. 3.

Civic Events

The municipality will be providing a variety of COVID-19 compliant free family concerts at the two following locations:
