Wildflower meadow for the Mill Cove area along waterfront

The site in question, the Mill Cove area along the Bedford Waterfront, is planned to be a wildflower meadow full of native species of grass and flowers.

Many residents of Bedford have expressed concerns over the Mill Cove area along the waterfront.

Residents are not liking the uncut grass and weeds in the area.

Bedford Councillor Tim Outhit receives calls daily in regards to the area, but he emphasizes that the boardwalk is “owned by the Waterfront Corporation and is not an HRM job.”

“People think it looks scruffy, but they can’t blame me for this one!” jokes Outhit.

Jacob Ritchie, Project Manager/Planner for the Waterfront Development Corporation Ltd. explains that “the site in question is planned to be a wildflower meadow full of native species of grass and flowers. This plan allows for upkeep that is less intensive than traditional lawn maintenance practices and provides a habitat for wildlife on the waterfront.”

Ritchie explains that “in light of the concerns that have been raised by residents we have asked the landscape architect who designed the site to inspect the conditions and let us know what maintenance we can perform to ensure that invasive species do not take over the wildflowers and to ensure that the edges to the meadow are well groomed.

This inspection will be followed up with the necessary seasonal maintenance of the site – including weeding and cutting back. The maturing of the meadow will take a few years to be complete and we will continue to maintain the site while the area around it develops.”

Pedestrians and visitors will be informed of the concept of the meadow by signs.
