Winter is coming; mix of snow and rain forecast overnight tonight

Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2016 (Halifax, NS) – Residents are advised to expect winter conditions overnight tonight and during their morning commute on Wednesday, as a mix of snow and rain is forecast to hit the region beginning later this evening. Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement in advance of a low pressure system that will bring snow to some parts of the region tonight and overnight, likely changing over to rain by Wednesday morning. Winter Operations crews are mobilized and undertaking pre-treatment of streets and sidewalks today through a combination of salt and liquid brine application. Crews will be on standby to clear snow that is expected to accumulate in amounts between 5 to 15 centimetres depending on the location across the Halifax region. Residents are asked to assist us in our efforts by proactively removing any obstructions or hazards from their property that may interfere with our ability to properly clear streets and sidewalks of snow and ice. Follow these simple steps to protect your property and ensure clearing efforts go as safely and smoothly as possible this season. • Trim any tree branches and shrubs that originate from your property. These can obstruct access and visibility for snow-clearing equipment. • Remove planters, lawn decorations and any other portable objects near the sidewalk before the winter.  • Items like sports equipment that may still be used should be safely stored when bad weather is in the forecast. • Mark any permanent structures or objects too big to move with a reflector that will be visible above the snow. This helps crews identify obstacles. • Ensure your vehicles are not parked on or obstructing the sidewalk. This is a dangerous obstacle for sidewalk crews, and results in accessibility   issues when crews can’t properly clear continuous sections of sidewalk. If you do incur property damage as a result of snow clearing this season, report as soon as you can to 311 so it can be addressed when the weather improves. Residents are reminded to secure off-street parking for the winter months so that snow plow operators can safely and efficiently clear the streets and sidewalks. The overnight winter parking ban will be in place again this season during declared weather events between Dec. 15, 2016 and Mar. 31, 2017. For the most up to date information before, during and after a winter storm, visit www.halifax.ca/snow, follow us on Twitter @hfxgov, or call 311. The municipality thanks residents in advance for their cooperation over the upcoming winter months. We can’t control Mother Nature or what this winter has in store, but if we work together we can all be better prepared for whatever the season may bring. Source: Release
