Winter storm weather statement (Issued Feb 2 2022 10am)

Winter storm with multiple precipitation types beginning Thursday evening.

Locations: All of Nova Scotia.

Time Span: Thursday evening through Saturday morning.

Remarks: A very slow moving weather system will bring a prolonged winter precipitation event to the province. Periods of rain will develop over the province later on Thursday, followed by a gradual transition through freezing rain and ice pellets to snow will spread from north to south across the province beginning early Friday morning. However over southern and Atlantic coastal areas precipitation could continue as rain until Friday night. Northern and central regions of the province could receive an extended period of freezing precipitation on Friday, while significant rainfall amounts are possible along the Atlantic coast.

There remains some uncertainty as to how quickly and what extent the colder air to the north will move into the province on Friday, and thus precipitation typing will be a significant challenge. All precipitation will taper to flurries by Saturday morning as the storm pulls off to the east.

Similar storms in the past have caused hazardous driving conditions, travel delays, power outages, and school closures.

Additional details will become available as the storm approaches.
