Winter weather event; recreation programs delayed Thursday morning

Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2017 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents to be prepared for another weather event expected to affect the region during the overnight hours into Thursday.

Environment Canada has issued a winter storm warning advising of an approaching weather system that is expected to bring upwards of 15 cm of snow and ice pellets, accompanied by high winds, which will result in blowing snow and reduced visibility. Winter Operations crews are still fully engaged in clean-up operations following an exceptional weather event earlier in the week that resulted in over 50 cm of snow accumulation. Some of the resources dedicated to snow removal and widening work will e required shift back to plowing operations once the snow gets underway.

Residents should be prepared for slippery conditions on streets and sidewalks across the region for the morning commute. Additionally, be aware that there may be pedestrians walking in roadways in areas where sidewalks cannot yet be cleared. Motorists should reduce speeds, particularly at intersections and driveways, and pedestrians are asked to walk toward traffic and wear high-visibility clothing.

Municipal programs & services

Due to the inclement weather conditions expected on Thursday morning, some municipally-operated recreation facilities – including arenas and the Emera Oval – will delay opening until at least 12 p.m. A further update will be provided by 11 a.m. Residents are encouraged to call ahead to their individual facility to confirm the status of their facility with respect to program delays or cancellations. A list of municipally-operated recreation facilities is available at www.halifax.ca/rec/reccentres.php.

Garbage, recycling and green cart collection is set to proceed as scheduled, however, there may be service delays depending on conditions. Please set material back from the curb in case snow clearing equipment returns to service your street or sidewalk.

The municipality thanks residents for their patience and cooperation over the coming days as snow clearing operations continue to improve conditions across the region. Please visit www.halifax.ca/snow for the most up-to-date snow clearing service updates, and the status of municipal services.
