Woman charged with drug impaired driving causing death

Kings District RCMP is investigating a fatal collision that occurred in Wolfville Ridge.

Yesterday, at approximately 14:30 p.m., Kings District RCMP, fire services, and EHS, responded to a report of a two-vehicle collision on Ridge Rd. near the 1200 block.

The investigation indicates that a Hyundai Santa Fe failed to negotiate a curve, left the roadway, travelling through the ditch, and struck a woman and a Toyota Corolla located off the roadway. The woman was standing near the Corolla.

The 87-year-old Berwick woman was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver and lone occupant of the Corolla, a 92-year-old Berwick man, suffered minor injuries. 

The passenger of the Santa Fe, a child from Berwick, was transported to hospital by EHS for observation.

The driver of the Santa Fe, a 37-year-old Berwick woman, was exhibiting signs of impairment.  She was arrested and transported to the Kings District East RCMP Detachment in New Minas where a drug evaluation was completed by a Drug Recognition Expert. The woman was not physically injured in the collision.

Naomi Janna Gerrits, 37, has been charged with Operation while Impaired Causing Death. She was held in custody and will be appearing in Kentville Provincial Court today.

A collision reconstructionist attended the scene and the investigation is ongoing.

Ridge Rd. was closed for several hours but has since reopened.
