At approximately 4:30 p.m. yesterday afternoon, the RCMP, Emergency Health Services paramedics, fire services personnel and the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre responded to a report that a group of swimmers were stranded by a riptide at a beach in Broad Cove.

Civilian bystanders at the scene rushed into the water and were able to rescue the swimmers.

Upon exiting the water, one of the civilian rescuers, a 45-year-old woman from Sydney, collapsed onshore. The other bystanders commenced CPR until EHS paramedics arrived, however the female was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene. Another adult male was treated at the scene and was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The death is not being treated as suspicious, however an investigation by the RCMP and the Medical Examiner’s Office is continuing.

Our thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends at this difficult time.
