Workers of Bryony House and Community Come Together to say “We Need a Home”
The workers of Bryony House, Members of Local 80022 of the Public Service Alliance of Canada will gather with supporters from the community for a mid-day demonstration Friday, November 15, 2019, to call on the management and board of Bryony House to work together with workers and the community to find an immediate temporary shelter.
Bryony House has operated the only shelter specializing in support for women and their children escaping intimate partner violence in the HRM since 1978. The aging shelter has had a series of issues and in early September it was determined that the building was no longer habitable. Despite the long history of issues, there was no contingency plan in place for an immediate temporary location for the shelter.
The workers of Bryony House have been speaking up for their client and their community. Between 1996 and 2015 40 women were killed by their intimate partners in Nova Scotia and the workers of Bryony House know that not having a shelter is a matter of life and death. Management has recently stated that a new space has been found but there has been no confirmation that the space meets the requirements or will be ready to use immediately.
