Would you recognize elder abuse of a loved one?

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day has been marked on June 15 each year since 2006, and aims to raise awareness of elder abuse throughout the world. Elder abuse may include neglect and mal- or mistreatment and is often financial in nature: financial exploitation or fraud. Throughout the world, abuse and neglect of older persons is largely under-recognized or treated as an unspoken problem.  Unfortunately, no community or country in the world is immune from this costly, public health and human rights crisis. This June 15, we want to remind everyone to protect the elder adults in your life – watch for these signs they might be  victims of or vulnerable to abuse: Social Isolation Bereavement Dependence on another to provide care Financially responsible for adult child or spouse Alcohol or drug abuse Depression or mental illness Cognitive problems Fearful, emotionally labile, or distressed Suspicious, delusional Change in appearance, poor hygiene Accompanied by caregiver who is overly protective; dominates patient/client Change in ability to perform activities of daily living, including self-care, daily finances, medication management Remember that a combination of ageism and disempowerment of the elderly lead to most elder abuse being well hidden. Be aware of and never ignore the signs of elder abuse. If you’re concerned that a parent, relative or other senior you know is suffering financial abuse, the New Brunswick Securities commission provides an excellent Financial Concerns Checklist which can help you gather more information and start a conversation about their financial well-being.
