Shortly before 9 a.m. this morning, Yarmouth Rural RCMP responded to a 911 call from a construction crew working on a bridge at Gavel Lake after they witnessed an adult male boater fall out of his small motorized boat and into the water.

A preliminary investigation has determined that the 46-year-old boater became distressed after falling into the water, and was struggling to remain at the surface. A nearby citizen immediately launched his row boat and headed out to rescue the man, however both the rescuer and the construction crew lost sight of him.

RCMP is currently on-scene and is being assisted by the Lake Vaughan Volunteer Fire Department and local Emergency Health Services. A search on the water and shores of Gavel Lake for the 46-year-old man is continuing. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team has also been called in to assist with the investigation.
