Yarmouth Rural RCMP investigates serious single-vehicle crash, Overton, N.S.

2015/11/7

Earlier today, Yarmouth Rural RCMP, Yarmouth Town RCMP, Yarmouth Fire Department and Emergency Health Services(EHS) were called to the scene of a single-vehicle crash on Highway 304 in the community of Overton.

Preliminary investigation revealed that at approximately 11:30 a.m., a lone vehicle was travelling along Highway 304 outbound when the driver failed to negotiate a sharp turn on the highway. The vehicle left the roadway and landed in a pond on its roof.

The 17-year-old front seat passenger climbed out of the vehicle and made his way to shore, suffering from minor injuries. The 17-year-old male driver and a 19-year-old rear passenger were trapped inside the vehicle.

On-scene RCMP officers, members of the Yarmouth Fire Department and local citizens entered the chest-deep water, pulled the vehicle closer to shore, and turned the vehicle upright. The driver and rear seat passenger were both released from their seatbelts and extracted from the vehicle. The driver has been air-lifted to Halifax with life-threatening injuries. Both the front and rear seat passengers were transported to hospital with minor injuries but have since been released.

Highway 304 is closed from Vancouver St. to the Overton Rd. corner. Traffic is being rerouted through Mainshore Rd. onto Overton Rd. The cause of the crash remains under investigation. An RCMP Traffic Reconstruction Analyst is assisting with the investigation.
