Youth charged after threatening student with gun, sending school into lockdown

Kings District RCMP has charged a youth after the lockdown of a high school in Cambridge.

On June 6, 2022, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Kings District RCMP received a report of a 16-year-old male youth threatening to attend Central Kings Rural High School (CKRHS) on Hwy. 1 in Cambridge to harm another student. The male youth also sent the victim a picture of a handgun. The high school immediately went on lockdown and the Cambridge and District Elementary School, which is adjacent to CKRHS, went on hold and secure.

RCMP officers with Kings District RCMP, Kings District RCMP General Investigation Section, RCMP Southeast Traffic Services and the Southwest Nova RCMP Major Crime Unit, immediately converged on the CKRHS and surrounding area. The Nova Scotia RCMP Emergency Response Team and RCMP Police Dog Services were also called in to assist.

During the investigation, RCMP officers learned that the male youth had attended a convenience store near CKRHS on Hwy. 1 and had left a backpack behind. The backpack was seized and a replica handgun was located inside.

RCMP officers were able to determine the youth’s general location and at approximately 2:35 p.m., he was located about two kilometers from the CKRHS and safely taken into custody.

The male youth has been charged with Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose and Uttering Threats. He will be appearing in Kentville Provincial Court today.

The RCMP would like to thank the public for their cooperation during the incident. Our officers were given the opportunity to perform their work, without interference, and they were able to make an arrest in a little over an hour.
