Youth charged in connection with hoax phone calls

Following an investigation by the General Investigation Section, a 15-year-old male from Bedford was arrested Tuesday night in connection with a series of hoax phone calls that took place this past January.

Over the course of the afternoon on January 30, several businesses in the Dartmouth area received phone calls from a male identifying himself as a firefighter. The male continued to instruct the employee of the business to trigger the fire alarm as a routine test to their system. After consultation with Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency, it was verified that this was not a practice they employ. This was a hoax that caused undue stress to emergency services and is a crime.

On July 5, at 5:30 p.m., investigators arrested the youth without incident in the 7000 block of Mumford Road in Halifax. He is to appear in Halifax Provincial Youth Court on December 15 to face a charge of mischief. The investigation into these matters is ongoing.
