Youth Charged In Facebook Extortion incident

Investigators with the Integrated HRP/RCMP General Investigation Section have charged a youth in relation to an online extortion incident that occurred in the fall of 2012.

In November 2012, a 16-year-old female youth contacted police after receiving a threatening demand on her Facebook account from someone she did not know. The suspect demanded that the victim provide naked pictures of herself or he would be post private pictures of her that were in his possession. When she refused, the suspect distributed the pictures that were in his possession to other people on Facebook.

The investigation revealed that several fictitious Facebook accounts were used and that the suspect was actually known to the victim. The investigation culminated yesterday with the execution of a search warrant at a Halifax residence where computer equipment was seized and a 17-year-old male youth arrested without incident.

The suspect has since been released from custody on conditions not to access the internet and is scheduled to appear in Halifax Provincial Youth Court on December 5. He is facing charges of extortion, distributing child pornography, possession of child pornography and mischief.
