2012 CrossFit Games; Day 1

I’m trying to remember if I’ve mentioned that I’m really inspired since returning from The CrossFitGames? Day 1 was absolute chaos, in an amazing way. The missus and I went over a bit earlier than the other FFAs for no other reason than I was wide awake and needed to get on the go. I felt like a kid at Christmas before heading over. “Can we go yet? Can we go yet?”. Actually, the main reason I wanted to go over early was because I wanted to watch the Masters Competitions because a woman from my home province, Prince Edward Island, was competing and I wanted to cheer her on! Her name is Carol Craswell and she’s actually the mother of one of my friends and with a population of 140,000 on our little island, it’s amazing that she was there competing! For those of you who don’t know, what the Masters is, they’re four separate divisions ranging from 45-49, 50-54, 55-59 and 60+ that all competed in The Games. Yup, that’s right, men and women from the ages of 45-60+ competed in the CrossFit Games! What’s your excuse for not being active again? I was so happy when I ran into Carol and her son and I got to meet her and shake her hand. She’s such an inspiration and it really made my day. After watching the Masters for a while, we took a tour through the vendor’s area. WOW. So much awesome shit! Workout apparel. Shoes. Supplements. Food, food and more food. Of course GNC was there and so were Reebok and Rogue Fitness but the amount of little vendors that are CrossFit related was awesome. The US Marine Core was also there and I did 20 chinups in a row to get my dad a wicked US MARINES baseball cap. I also learned that there are other forms of CrossFit that exist. CrossFit Football, CrossFit gymnastics, CrossFit Striking. Very cool. I wasn’t planning on working out on Friday but I got suckered into flipping a 500lbs tire as many times as I could in 30 seconds (I did it 8 times) and I also made the bell go DING! It was funny because there were all these big muscle dudes trying to do it and couldn’t I stepped up and hit it on my first try and did it 4 times in a row. I had a bit of an advantage though, growing up we use to cut down our own trees, block it and split it since I was about 8 years old. It’s not how big you are, it’s all in the form. After trolling around for about an hour and getting as much free stuff as we could, we moved on to watch the women and that’s where I was introduced to my new favorite athlete, Camille Leblanc-Bazinet. CANADIAN! At only 5’2″ she’s a BEAST! Watching her do the Track Triplet was unreal. It was 3 rounds for time of 8 75lbs slpit snatches, 7 bar muscle-ups and a 400m run. I just threw up in my mouth thinking about it. After the awe inspiring women’s events we grabbed some lunch at the Paleo Wagon. You heard me. The Paleo Wagon. It wasn’t cheap, but it was healthy and it was a lot of food. I had the meatball, half an avocado, half a cucumber and sweet potato while Gina had some sort of beef thing. I was stuffed after eating all of that but I couldn’t NOT get the turkey leg that was the size of my face. We ended up missing the men’s track triplet because we wanted to score good seats in the stadium for the afternoon’s events, so I didn’t get to see their first day track events, but the rest of the afternoon was awesome. The team event was bad-ass and probably one of my favorite things to watch. Working together as a group for an end goal has always been one of my favorite things in sports. The men’s next event was the Medball – Hand Stand Push-Ups, 3 rounds for time. They had to do 8 150lbs Med-ball clean, 100ft Med-ball carry, 7 Parallette handstand push-ups, 100ft Med-ball carry. Yeah. The women did the same workout but with an 80lbs medicine ball, which is more than I could probably do. After an amazing day at The Games, myself, the missus my fellow FFAs and Kelly got to sit down and have supper with Chris from GNC and pick his brain about what the brand is doing and their plans to help inform the general public, fitness enthusiasts and athletes about the GNC products. The main topic of discussion was not about “how” to get people to take our supplements, but the “WHY” they should take them and “WHO” should take them and all of their benefits. The best part about this is that I’m getting learning and getting educated and informed and I’m going to be passing along the information to you guys. Do you guys supplement post workout? What do you take? I’m going to be elaborating on what I take shortly but I am really interested in knowing what YOU take and why?...
