4-H Members Learn Livestock Management at 25th Annual EastGen Showcase

Ninety 4-H members will participate in two days of training to learn the finer points of dairy and beef calf health and care, the latest techniques in show preparation, display design, and showmanship skills.

Ninety 4-H members will participate in two days of training to learn the finer points of dairy and beef calf health and care, the latest techniques in show preparation, display design, and showmanship skills.

The 25th annual EastGen Showcase will be held July 11-13 at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Grounds in Bible Hill.

“We are pleased that for 25 years we’ve had an excellent working relationship with EastGen and that their professionals teach our future farmers the latest herd management and showmanship techniques,” said Keith Colwell, Minister of Agriculture.

Dale MacPhee, EastGen regional sales manager, emphasizes the the animal production company’s commitment to supporting youth in agriculture.

“This showcase is one of four youth events sponsored by EastGen,” said Mr. MacPhee. “The EastGen 4-H Showcase is one of the more anticipated events held annually, and youth are mentored to be future leaders in agriculture. Over the weekend, we really embrace the 4-H motto of Learn to do by Doing and in the process participants develop lifetime friendships.”

Atlantic 4-H beef and dairy members who are 13 to 21 years old are eligible to attend EastGen. Those selected are expected to bring the information back to their 4-H club.

Department of Agriculture leadership co-ordinators work with EastGen staff to host this program.

4-H members show their own calves at the beef and dairy show at 9:30 a.m., on Sunday, in the Agridome at the exhibition grounds. Awards will be presented to the champion presenters and calves, as well as those who excelled in session work. The public is invited to attend the livestock show.
