Premier Offers Condolences on Passing of Maxine Cochran

Premier Stephen McNeil offered condolences today, July 8, to the family and friends of Maxine Cochran, who was the first female cabinet minister in Nova Scotia.

Mrs. Cochran was elected to the Nova Scotia legislature in 1984 as the Progressive Conservative member for Lunenburg Centre.

In 1985, she became the Minister of Transportation under Premier John Buchanan.

“Mrs. Cochran’s impact on breaking down political barriers for women in this province is immeasurable,” said Mr. McNeil. “She paved the way for the many women who are serving in elected roles and in government’s cabinet today.

“She made a mark on Nova Scotia history that will never be forgotten. I offer my sincerest condolences to her family, friends and former colleagues.”
