Friday, May 8, 2015 (Halifax, NS) – The Halifax Regional Municipality is advising residents that archaeological excavation work required for the Dartmouth Canal Greenway project at the former Starr Manufacturing site in downtown Dartmouth will result in a partial closure of the existing walkway, between the Irishtown Road gravel parking lot and the crossing trail that connects with Pleasant Street, early next week.

The walkway closure will begin on Monday, May 11, and is expected to be in place for several weeks. The walkway will be fully reinstated as part of the Dartmouth Canal Greenway project later this year. Signage will be installed in the interim to advise pedestrians of the closure.

The section of the walkway between the Esso gas station and the crossing trail connecting to Pleasant Street, will remain open and provide pedestrians with an alternative option to get to Portland Street from Prince Albert Road.

The remainder of the Dartmouth Canal Greenway walkway will be unaffected by this work.

The municipality regrets any inconvenience this work may cause.

The Shubenacadie Canal System is a unique system of natural lakes and rivers connected by man-made locks and canals. It is designated as a National Historic Civil Engineering Site and connects Halifax Harbour with Cobequid Bay and the communities in between. A multi-year Canal Greenway project will result in the completion of an open space spine through the most urban portion of Downtown Dartmouth between Lake Banook and Halifax Harbour.
