At 12:45 a.m. today, members of Colchester District RCMP were conducting a checkpoint at the intersection of Lower Truro Rd. and Truro Heights Rd.

A Ford pickup failed to stop for checkpoint, and once he drove past the police officers, he accelerated quickly. The truck headed up Truro Heights Rd., and police attempted to locate the vehicle but were not able to find it. They did obtain the licence plate number of the vehicle and continued to look for it.

At 1:36 a.m. RCMP officers responded to a complaint from a citizen indicating they saw a truck coming out of the woods and driving across someone’s lawn on Anita Crescent. The description provided by the caller indicated it was the same truck that had fled the checkpoint earlier. Police officers headed in that direction, and then located the truck at 2 a.m. on Robie St. in Lower Truro. Police followed the truck until backup arrived, and then attempted to stop it near Gaspar Cross Rd. in Salmon River. The driver swerved in front of one police car and struck another police car in the process. He then came to a stop in the ditch.

The driver was arrested without incident. He was read the Roadside Screening Device Demand, the test was administered, and the driver passed. Paramedics attended the scene and took the driver to hospital for assessment for minor injuries. One RCMP officer suffered a non life-threatening injury and required hospital treatment. He was released from hospital later this morning. There was no one else in the pickup truck with the driver.

Jason Douglas Heim, 27, of Truro Heights is charged with Flight From Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm, and Assault Police Officer Causing Bodily Harm. Held in custody overnight and appearing in Truro Provincial Court today. The investigation is ongoing.
