Taking pride in our crosswalks
The Halifax Regional Municipality is demonstrating its commitment to diversity and inclusion by reimplementing and expanding the rainbow crosswalk program in celebration of Halifax Pride 2019.
The rainbow flag is synonymous with the 2SLGBTQ+ community and as such the municipality is showing the colours of Pride in our communities. Crosswalks that are being repainted include:
- Spring Garden Road and South Park Street*
- Spring Garden Road and Queen Street*
- Gottingen and Cornwallis streets*
- Alderney Drive and Ochterloney Street*
- Willet and Main streets**
- Bedford Highway at Hammonds Plains Road**
- Sackville Drive and Cobequid Road**
- Sackville and Leaside drives**
- Sackville and Millwood drives**
- Portland Estates Boulevard West and Portland Estates Boulevard**
- Cow Bay and Shore roads**
- Quinpool Road and Harvard Street**
- Quinpool Road and Vernon Street**
- Portland and King streets****
In addition to painted crosswalks located in the areas cited above, new rainbow crosswalks have been added this year at:
- Herring Cove and Dentith roads**
- Brunswick Street and Spring Garden Road**
- Summer Street and University Avenue***
- Robie Street and University Avenue***
- Barrington and Sackville streets***

The paint is a heavy-duty surface tolerant paint and an anti-slip additive has been added to increase durability, surface friction and reflectivity.

Sidewalk Painting Not Permitted.
The municipality recognizes many residents and businesses have a desire to express support for Halifax Pride 2019 through street art. While we are proud that the public wishes to share such positive message, public safety remains our top priority.
The municipality encourages residents and business owners to familiarize themselves with By-law S-300, the Street By-law (specifically Sections 30 and 43) and By-law S-801 for Temporary Signs (specifically Part 5) when considering adding artwork to municipal sidewalks. Please remember that business names and advertisements cannot be included in the artwork.
Some materials, especially when applied to sidewalks, can become slippery in wet weather. It is in the interest of public safety that material, other than chalk sticks, not be applied on the right-of-way by residents and business owners. Crews will remove artwork on sidewalks that violate municipal By-laws.
The co-operation and consideration of residents and business owners is appreciated.
